Another Reshuffle, Another New Housing Secretary
Once again, the spinning door of housing ministers has rolled, however this time, rather than a change of Housing Minister, there has been a change in the Secretary of State. With Sajid Javid’s promotion to Home Secretary in the wake of Amber Rudd’s resignation, James Brokenshire has been appointed the new Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.
While Javid’s move to the Home Office is indeed a promotion, housing continues to sit at the top of the government’s plan and agenda. Brokenshire is expected to set out his key priorities in the first weeks of his appointment.
With numerous major issues being of concern, it is anticipated that affordable housing shortages will be the first issue Mr Brokenshire needs to tackle.
Whilst housing is clearly at the top of the political agenda, it must also be remembered that Brokenshire will also be in charge of communities and local government. With the priority here being to ensure that housing is provided hand in hand with infrastructure, achieved at the appropriate scale with stakeholders.
